Getting ‘in shape’ can mean different things to different people and the rate at which this is achieved also varies person to person. I feel, generally speaking, that once you’ve achieved a level of fitness it is easier to then regain (in comparison to getting there in the first place) but should not be taken half hearted.

Especially after being ill for 2 years you should consult your doctor/GP before carrying out regular strenuous exercise (as I’m sure you have already). Also make sure to start at a manageable level before building up at structured pace (e.g. think to yourself; I’m going to run 1mile today, 1.2mile next training day, 1.4mile the training day after that, etc) and include regular rest days especially at the start.
