What are some of the best Indian movies ever made, and what makes them the best?

I watch a lot of movies predominantly HINDI movies. I like all kinds of movies but DRAMA and SUSPENSE are my best genres. I have compiled a list based on genre.

HERE I GO.

(A) COMEDY

  1. ANGOOR

It is based on Shakespeare’s ‘A comedy of errors’, this is a story of identical twins (2 pairs) and mistaken identities

2. JAANE BHI DO YAARO

Two friends, attempting to start-up their own photo studio, come across shady dealings, corruption and murder, and must fight to bring the guilty to light.

3. GOL MAAL

Ramprasad is a recent college graduate who finds a job with a finicky man, Bhavani Shankar, who believes that a man without a mustache is a man without a character. Bhavani Shankar is also against any of his employees indulging in recreation of any kind. When Ramprasad is caught by his boss at a soccer match, he has to invent a twin brother, the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad, to save his job. When Bhavani’s daughter falls in love with the clean-shaven Laxman Prasad, and insists on marrying him, and Bhavani insists she should marry Ramprasad, things take a whacky turn. A fake mother and a hilarious chase are other enjoyable features involved in this comedy.

4. ANDAZ APNA APNA

Amar and Prem are two rivals who belonging to middle-class families with no scope of future advancement. Both individually, without the knowledge of the other decide to take matters into their hands and find ways to get rich quickly. Chaos and acrimony result when both find each other at loggerheads when both arrive to win the hand of the daughter of multi-millionaire Ram Gopal Bajaj amidst considerable upheavals when Shyam, the twin brother of Ram, decides to do away with Ram and assume his identity and thus take over the estate of the Bajaj family.

5. HERA PHERI

Three unemployed men find the answer to all their money problems when they recieve a call from a kidnapper. However, things do not go as planned…

6. GOLMAAL FUN UNLIMITED

Four absolute-good-for-nothing con-men force themselves into a blind couple’s home, pretending that one of them is the couple’s America returned grandson. There they meet the beautiful, brainless neighbor Rimi Sen, and promptly fall in love. More foolishness ensues as the foursome evade their debtor Vasool bhai and plan on foiling a gangster’s plan to retrieve stolen diamonds.

7. BHEJA FRY

Ranjit, who makes fun of idiots, gets completely annoyed when he invites a tax inspector and a singer to his house.

8. KHICHDI THE MOVIE

In order to immortalize his love, a groom decides to create conflict between his and his to-be bride’s families.

9. MALAMAAL WEEKLY

Lilaram sells lottery tickets and one customer has hit the jackpot but dies of shock upon finding out that he has won. Now, Lilaram wants all the money, and so does everyone around him.

(B) CRIME

  1. BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday is a film about the investigations following the 1993 serial Bombay bomb blasts, told through the different stories of the people involved –police, conspirators, victims, middlemen.

2. SATYA

A young man named Satya (J.D Chakravarthy) comes to Mumbai from South India in search of a job. Jailed for something he did not do, the once-honest young man meets an underworld boss, Bhiku Mhatre (Manoj Bajpai) in jail and joins his gang. He lives in a poor neighborhood, where he meets, Vidya (Urmila Matondkar), who lives next door. She is not aware of his underworld connections. Satya slowly rises up the ranks of his gang, and becomes the most influential person. Satya is torn between his girlfriend and his gangster life.

3. HAIDER

Vishal Bhardwaj’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’, Haider – a young man returns home to Kashmir on receiving news of his father’s disappearance. Not only does he learn that security forces have detained his father for harboring militants, but that his mother is in a relationship with his very own uncle. Intense drama follows between mother and son as both struggle to come to terms with news of his father’s death. Soon Haider learns that his uncle is responsible for the gruesome murder, what follows is his journey to avenge his father’s death.

(C) DRAMA

  1. ANAND

A melodramatic tale of a man with a terminal disease. Anand, the title character, is suffering from lymphosarcoma of the intestine. He, however appears to be cheerful on the outside and is determined to extract as much pleasure from his remaining lifespan as is possible. Dr. Bhaskar his physician tends to Anand in his last days. After Anand dies we can however still hear his voice which was recorded on a tape.

2. ANKHON DEKHI

Ankhon Dekhi centers around Raje Bauji, played by Sanjay Mishra who, after a dramatic incident, decides that he will only believe what he sees with his eyes.

3. DASVIDANIYA

Amar Kaul, an obedient son and a man of extra ordinary schedules and routines who had given up all his dreams and love of his life for pursuing his duties to his momma. One day he finds out that he is terminally ill and decides to live and fulfill all his incomplete wishes and makes a list of 10 things to do before his demise.

4. DIL CHAHTA HAI

Three inseparable childhood friends are just out of college. Nothing comes between them – until they each fall in love, and their wildly different approaches to relationships creates tension.

5. DO DOONI CHAAR

The film deals with the issue of underpaid teachers, and their issue with their self-worth in the face of growing inflation and demands of their family. The middle-class school teacher who works overtime to support his income and to send his children to good schools, ends up in a moral dilemma, when it comes to fulfilling the needs of his ever unsatisfied teenage children.

6. DOR

Two woman –different backgrounds, miles apart, and strangers to each other– are linked by tragedy. Their new-found friendship is tested as one holds the fate of the other’s husband in her hands.

7. EK DOCTOR KI MAUT

The movie tells story about a doctor(Pankaj Kapur), who after a long year of painful research, successful in developing a Vaccine for Leprosy. What follows after that is his struggle and fight to the bureaucracy and disapproval happening in medical society.

8. GUIDE

Railway Raju (nicknamed) is a disarmingly corrupt tour guide who is famous among tourists. He falls in love with a beautiful dancer, Rosie, the neglected wife of archaeologist Marco. Marco doesn’t approve of Rosie’s passion for dancing. Rosie, encouraged by Raju, decides to follow her dreams and start a dancing career……..

9. GULAAL

Dilip Kumar Singh is enrolled in a Law college, and rents a room with Rananjay Singh. His attempts to re-locate to a hostel, pits him against a group of men, led by Jadhwal, who not only assault, but also molest him. He joins hands with Rananjay and Dukey Bana to avenge this humiliation, as well as befriends Anuja, who is a Lecturer in the college. He also decides to support Rananjay, who is legitimate son of a former Raja, to run for college elections – and it is this decision that will shatter and change his life forever.

10. LIFE IN A METRO

Six different stories, about nine people, each with different issues and problems, all occurring within one place: the METRO.

The story of six young Indians who assist an English Woman to film a documentary on the extremist freedom fighters from their past, and the events that lead them to relive the long forgotten saga of freedom.

17. SADMA

The picture tells the story of Nehalata, a young woman who regresses to childhood after suffering a head injury in a car crash. Lost, she ends up trapped in a brothel before being rescued by Somu , a lonely school teacher who falls in love with her.

18. SHAHID

The account of Human Rights lawyer Shahid Azmi, an ordinary citizen with an extraordinary commitment to justice.

19. SHOLAY

After his family is murdered by a notorious and ruthless bandit, a former police officer enlists the services of two outlaws to capture him.

21. SWADES

All too soon, Mohan realises how harsh village life is after experiencing problems such as gender discrimination, child marriage, lack of education, caste disctrimination and poverty amongst other things.

22. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR

An eight-year-old boy is thought to be lazy and a trouble-maker, until the new art teacher has the patience and compassion to discover the real problem behind his struggles in school.

23. TITLI

In the badlands of Delhi’s dystopic underbelly, Titli, the youngest member of a violent car-jacking brotherhood, plots a desperate bid to escape the ‘family’ business.

24. TRAFFIC SIGNAL

Silsila is the “manager” of one traffic signal, that is he collects the “hafta” (protection tax) from each signal squatter plying his trade. He reports to Jaffer bhai the local goon. Jaffer bhai in turn reports to Haji the leader of the local mafia. And the hafta, from each traffic signal and territory Haji controls, seeps upward to the politicians. Life is routine, until Silsila and Jaffer bhai get caught up in a chain of events which threatens the very source of their livelihood………

25. UDAAN

After being abandoned for eight straight years in boarding school, Rohan returns to the small industrial town of Jamshedpur and finds himself closeted with an authoritarian father and a younger half brother who he didn’t even know existed. Forced to work in his father’s steel factory and study engineering against his wishes, he strives to forge his own life out of his given circumstances and pursue his dream of being a writer.

Nandini has to choose between Sameer, the man who taught her to fall in love; and Vanraj, the man from whom she learnt how to abide and fulfill promises of love.

9. MAINE PYAR KIYA

Maine Pyar Kiya tells the story of the two friends Prem and Suman, who gradually fall in love with each other. It is the debut of salman khan in a leading role after he appeared in Biwi ho to aisi (1988) in a supporting role.

Gone are the days when the Indian daughter-in-law stood by silently and got abused and slapped around by her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, et al. Here, the daughter-in-law has not only her cruel and intimidating mom-in-law, but also her equally cruel, sister-in-law by the hair, and some may say, well under her thumb. A glaring and perhaps a light-hearted look at the evil of dowry, and lack of which still does result in cruelties being inflicted even on well educated and cultured women in modern yet secular and tradition-bond India.

7. MATRUBHOOMI

The film examines the impact of female foeticide and female infanticide on the gender balance and consequently the stability and attitudes of society. Its storyline bears some resemblance to real-life instances of gender imbalance and economics resulting in fraternal polyandry and bride buying in some parts of India.

Vaidehi gets married to Raghuvir, an NRI. 15. SEHAR
